Volunteers from Eastleigh Borough Council, the One Horton Heath (OHH) team, Wates Residential, and a number of local businesses gave up their mornings recently to support Year 10 students at Wyvern College in a series of mock interviews.

The session aimed to help students prepare for their upcoming college interviews and begin thinking seriously about their future career paths. Students had the opportunity to sit down with professionals from a range of sectors, taking part in “speed interviewing” sessions where they answered a range of questions and received personalised feedback.

Each pupil had a 10-minute slot with an interviewer, who asked questions designed to help them reflect on their strengths, identify areas for improvement, and articulate their interests and goals. The questions covered topics such as:

  • Personal strengths and weaknesses
  • Hobbies and extracurricular interests
  • Career aspirations and future plans
  • Motivations and achievements

While some students were understandably a little nervous, many quickly found their confidence, and almost all left the session saying they found it both exciting and insightful.

Jules Gough from Wyvern College said; “It’s so valuable for our students to experience a real interview setting in a supportive environment. It gives them confidence, helps them articulate their aspirations, and encourages them to think more deeply about their futures.”

The feedback from volunteers was equally positive. Many said they were impressed by the students’ enthusiasm and maturity, and appreciated the chance to support young people in the local community.

“It was a great experience for everyone involved,” said one member of the Council’s team. “It’s so rewarding to help guide the next generation as they start thinking about their careers.”
