Helping local students build
careers in construction

As construction continues at The Lower Acre, One Horton Heath is exploring new opportunities to help local young people take their first steps into the construction industry.

Representatives from Taurus Brickwork and Wates Residential recently visited Eastleigh College to meet Level 1 bricklaying students and discuss potential work experience placements connected to the One Horton Heath development.

During the visit, students showcased their practical masonry skills in the college workshop and had the opportunity to speak with the team about careers in construction, gaining qualifications and obtaining CSCS cards needed for working on site.

The visit also introduced the opportunity for two students to undertake work experience placements at the development, with the possibility of applying for future apprenticeship roles with Taurus Brickwork later in the year.

Taurus Brickwork is a specialist bricklaying contractor working across the south of England, delivering residential and commercial developments alongside major construction partners. The company is supporting brickwork delivery at The Lower Acre development.

College staff highlighted the importance of giving students real-world experience alongside their classroom learning, helping to build confidence and understanding of working within a live construction environment.

Eastleigh College’s bricklaying courses combine both practical and theory-based learning across Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications. Students develop core skills including bricklaying techniques, setting out foundations, reading technical drawings, understanding construction materials and safe working practices, while also benefiting from industry visits, guest speakers and work placement opportunities.

The college currently supports a diverse mix of male and female students who are developing the skills needed to pursue careers within the construction sector.

One Horton Heath remains committed to supporting local employment and training opportunities throughout the development, working closely with contractors and education providers to help create pathways into the industry for local residents.
