Spring 2022 Employment and skills roundup

Find out what our employment and skills team have been up to during spring 2022

Pool of construction careers resources for students continues to grow

Over the past few months, our Employment and Skills team have been developing our pool of careers resources by creating a suite of videos featuring interviews with industry professionals as well as direct careers advice.

The videos are aimed at students wishing to pursue a career in the construction and development sectors and can be used by schools, colleges and employment support organisations to provide career insight and inspiration.

Several new resources have been developed over the past few months, and were released at the beginning of March in conjunction with National Careers Week:

  • One Horton Heath - Careers in Construction and Development - an overview of careers opportunities in the construction and development industries
  • The Value of Volunteering –  a glimpse into the different benefits that volunteering can bring for young people’s career pathways, featuring interviews with Eastleigh’s local charity volunteer service One Community, youth charity Solent Youth Action and the Country Parks team with Eastleigh Borough Council, as well as two students from Barton Peverill Sixth Form College.
  • Place Creators – three brand new interviews were added to the Place Creators construction careers inspiration project over the course of National Careers Week, featuring interviews with Youth Worker Ross Walters, Landscape Architect Michelle Good and apprentice Electrician George Kirk.

Fareham College hosts Skills Development Business Breakfast

On the 26th of April, One Horton Heath linked up with Fareham College to deliver a business breakfast event linking local education providers with organisations working on the One Horton Heath development.

The event was all about opening up communication between Hampshire-based educators and industry specialists to shed light on things like new technology, future industry skills requirements, and career entry pathways.

The event, which saw representatives from several local colleges attend, also featured three presentations from industry experts on topics relating to the development: Ben Ingham of Solar Roofing Specialists spoke about careers in sustainable energy; Katherine Jones of Wates delivered a talk on social value, and Duncan Rae of Genius Energy Labs presented on the skill requirements and future of ground source heat pumps.

After the event, attendees were keen to provide feedback:

“Meeting employers and hearing about their requirements for employees was of absolute benefit and can influence training and education of young people when preparing and advising them for the workplace”

“The expert knowledge of employers and their inputs into current skills shortages was really useful"

“It’s been great hearing about the ways the industry are working to meet the demand/ requirements of sustainability/ renewable energy and how they are promoting the construction industry to meet the growing demand for recruitment.”

One Horton Heath team members conduct mock interviews with students

On the 4th of April, members of the One Horton Heath team attended Wyvern College in Fair Oak to help out at their employability day.

Employment and Skills Manager Lea Hampton and Senior Communications Officer Zoe Walne were on hand to conduct mock interviews and give students a taste of what to expect from an interview scenario.

Speaking about their time at the event, Lea said:

"As Employment and Skills Manager, I know how important it is to get students prepared for the real world when they leave school. Many of the students will not have been in an interview scenario before so conducting practice interviews is a great way to build confidence in these young people."
