Building Second Chances: How Hope & Clay Are Supporting Local Talent at One Horton Heath

Building Second Chances: How Hope & Clay Are Supporting Local Talent at One Horton Heath

We’re proud to partner with organisations that build the physical foundations of our new community and help lay the groundwork for lasting social impact. One such partner is Hope & Clay, an onsite contractor working on key infrastructure, including road links, ground preparation, and below-ground drainage since early 2024.

Alongside ATS Group, Hope & Clay is delivering a training initiative that supports both ex-offenders from Category D prisons and individuals referred through Job centres while on Universal Credit. The programme provides a route into the construction industry for people looking to re-enter the workforce, regardless of background.

Launched in September 2024, the scheme is funded by ATS and supported by local authorities. Candidates are vetted by ATS, then undergo a pre-screening process led by the team before being invited to interview. Several participants have already gone on to secure roles at One Horton Heath and other Hope & Clay sites across the region.

Successful applicants are offered a comprehensive training package that includes:

  • Level 1 Health & Safety Awareness
  • CSCS Green Card qualification
  • Modules in manual handling, fire marshalling, abrasive wheels, asbestos awareness, and traffic marshalling

Participants can also progress through specialised career pathways such as:
  • Groundworks
  • Excavation
  • Forklift operations
  • Lifting technician roles
  • Specialist plant operations (including high-demand roles like dumper and tipper drivers)

These skills not only build employability but also restore confidence and offer a valuable sense of purpose.

Individuals in the photos came through the job centre referral scheme.

Kaylie, one of the participants, shared: “It’s been really good. You’re able to come out with more qualifications than you’d normally have going onto a site - it’s made a real difference.”

This impactful programme is helping people from a range of backgrounds take positive steps forward, while also developing a skilled and motivated local workforce.
