New Primary School at Horton Heath set to power growing community
Design work is moving forward on the primary school at Eastleigh Borough Council’s new community in Horton Heath.
Eastleigh Borough Council is delivering the school as part of our ‘infrastructure-first’ approach. That means putting key services in place early, so families have what they need as the new community grows.
A school designed for children, families and the wider community
The school will be a modern, welcoming place to learn, designed to support children’s learning, wellbeing and inclusion. Plans include flexible teaching spaces, provision for children with additional needs, and safe, accessible outdoor areas for play and outdoor learning. The design is also being developed with sustainability in mind, with a focus on reducing energy use and running costs.
The wider site will also provide extra facilities for the community, including a sports pitch and allotments, helping to support healthy, active living and community life.
Built to grow with One Horton Heath
The school is planned as a “three-form entry” primary school. This means it can take up to three classes in each year group when the community is bigger. It is expected to open at a smaller size and expand in stages as demand increases. The design also allows for early years provision, which means education and care for younger children before they start primary school.
We have worked with education specialists to shape the design, including local headteachers and an education steering group, and we have learned from visits to schools delivered recently across Hampshire. We are aiming to go beyond just the national standards, set by the Department for Education, wherever we can.
Cllr Keith House, Leader of Eastleigh Borough Council, said:
“This is exactly what infrastructure first looks like – a new school at the heart of a new community, designed not just to educate but to bring people together. It’s a milestone for Horton Heath and for our ambition to lead the way on sustainable development. We’re proud to be delivering facilities that support families, learning and community life from the very start.”
