One Horton Heath helps to create new skills and learning centre on site

One Horton Heath helps to create new skills and learning centre on site

The Routes skills Centre, is the first beneficiary of the One Horton Heath development, utilising a quarter of an acre on the site to provide a youth training hub.

The new centre will accommodate bespoke classrooms and a new outdoor garden space for training and developing skills.

Developed through a partnership between Eastleigh Borough Council, Edmonds Learning and Development and Solent Youth Action, students will learn BTEC courses in construction, horticulture and teamwork.

The centre will also focus on supporting young people to develop independence and self-esteem since leaving school.

A successful planning application has granted the use of the facility for a period of five years. The first students are due onsite in late spring 2021.

Rory Watson-Newman, Land and Estates Manager One Horton Heath said:

“We were thrilled that we could find a suitable space for The Routes Skills Centre. The area has established infrastructure and as the new development evolves there will be the opportunity for students to visit the site and meet with construction professionals.”

Lea Hampton, Employment and Skills Manager One Horton heath said:

“We will be working with our supply chain to support local initiatives that help students gain a range of transferable skills. The development will bring lots of employment opportunities into the area and we want local young people to have the skills and knowledge to succeed in local job roles. The work that Kailea Hurcombe and Steve Edmonds do to support young people at points in their lives when they need that additional help is really valuable.”

Kailea Hurcombe, CEO Solent Youth Action said:

“We are beyond excited about this new skills centre. More than ever, young people need support to progress and build their confidence. Lea and Rory have worked tirelessly to support this initiative which will pay dividends in the outcomes that will be achieved for the young people we will support there.”
